To obtain good printing results, the thermal transfer ribbon is as important as its support. More precisely, both must be perfectly compatible. There are many types of thermal transfer ribbons with different characteristics.

The thermal transfer ribbon consists of a polyester film (standard material), ink layer(s) and the protective layer at the back. Depending on the composition of the ink layer there can be a detachment (release) layer under it for a better separation of the standard material and a top layer over it for better adhesion to the surface being printed on. The most important components of the ink layer are the pigments. Before the coating of the ribbons they are mixed with wax, a wax-resin mix or resin. The “wax” quality on the one hand requires little energy for printing, but is not very resistant. On the other hand, the "resin" quality is highly resistant, but requires a lot of energy for printing and is not compatible with all materials.

A high density of pigments, as well as printing with very good contrast and high resolution, even of the finest lines, is always preferred. The printing must have good resistance to scratching and wiping. A very sensitive thermal transfer ribbon increases the lifespan of the printer head since it is possible to print at low temperatures.

A wide range of ribbons is therefore needed to obtain high quality printing adapted to a specific use, in the desired colour and resolution on any labels. The following factors might also need to be taken into account: printing speed, resistance to temperature and chemical products as well as approved use in contact with food.

Finding the right combination is a science in itself. Through tests in our laboratory we seek the ideal ribbon for your requirements. Feel free to contact us.
